School logistics

For this year:
K-2 tables and chairs
3-6 desks and chairs (we have 5)

Trev suggested:
This year buy TVs/DVD players
Next year buy computers to teach typing and web development etc.
SPCA could have own website using something easy like WordPress that kids could learn to update themselves regularly.
Buy school camera that can easily import to laptops, so kids can make presentations or create regular blog posts about our garden, chickens, Chapel, what they are learning, favorite subject and so on.

Start day with pledges, prayer requests, prayer, and Bible…
(Calendar and reviews can come later (after recess?) with all or just with K-2.

Maybe Trev and Andrew could work together on TV/DVD and web stuff.

I (or Ros and I, if she wants) could make the pertinent lists, schedules.

What to do in case of flood/School closure – who calls?  If they are out of town, then who?
What is our hierarchy?  Who do we go to and in which order?

Christina may want to take on the handbooks – student, teacher/assistant

Decide what we allow and when families/siblings can be involved.

I remember 2 room schoolhouse in 2nd grade – 2 teachers for 28 kids I think. 5 in my class. Had our own area and teacher came to us I think.

If had one paid FT teacher @ 25,000 and aids still volunteered and say 25 kids, that = 1,000 per student, so instead of about $100/ month it would be $200/month and still need volunteers. That would end up being too much for families with 4 kids = $800.

I wonder how involved church members would end up being – with materials, help, finances.. ?

Hours/volunteer expectations – based on family, number of kids, max per family…?

Additional questions

Our calendar of say 180 days, ok to not all be full days, right? – Like some minimum days.

What is the scriptural basis for the traditional education approach?  Sounds critical to be on board with that.
I disagree with some of the why’s in both teaching and parenting. But I agree that the why comes second in many cases.

Want to be sure we aren’t putting kids in a box and not allowing the celebrating and use of their giftedness.

S.S.

Obedience

We know God and he is consistent and that’s why we can trust him

Just so as parents they need to see us be consistent.

I need to choose one focus in parenting or faith from God daily as opposed to things to get done.

Don’t forget

Bags
Towels
Change of clothes
Wet bag
Make lunch
Abby clothes and chair?

Hi Rachael,

In case you get this and have a chance to look at it before I catch you tomorrow, here are some questions I have that I would love to discuss, even if it is just for a few minutes.  I so appreciate your time, willingness to let me ask you questions, and your seeking to support me.  The questions below aren’t listed in any particular order, I have just been jotting down questions as they come to mind.

1.  Where do you see that the school is at on a spiritual, scriptural level.  Where do you see it going/moving in that areviseOverview:
Mj may know better
Because school not church, focus on absolutes, pillars of faith, Christ, scripture, apostles creed – spiritually core.
Don’t foresee school going into beyond the core and into particular
Primary goal is yo educate students with christian worldview.

2.  Can you clarify for me the vision/mission of the school?  (I feel confused by what has been said to me, the website, Facebook, and brochures/flyers.)  Is everything the school does filtered through it?

Met 2 winters ago to revise these. Website up to darocc
Other things are core values.
More that open to anyone.
Do run through it.

3.  How does everyone feel about the elective classes and fun Friday?  And what are future thoughts for those?

How these work is who we have available.
Spanish BC Celia only 1 day/ week
Technology shift mid last year – massive overhaul
PE – 2 days (would like more)
Music – j put lots of thought into hers
Dennis –
Fun Friday is this year more academic
Feedback last year too babyish – that’s why chapel student led and fun Friday…
Maybe incorporate enrichment into ff.

4.  Adria let me know that Pastor Pete stepped down as Chairman temporarily.  Who has taken his place (I feel like I have heard Dennis Bolt has, is that correct?), and if Pastor Pete decides not to return, what would the process be to find a permanent replacement?

Bylaws state someone from church or appointed by pastor
Dennis resp. Right now run meetings
Pete back Aug 1
Decision with board and elders

5.  In reading to understand the Board of Trustees more on the website, it looks like only the board can stay after the first hour of the meeting.  Does that mean you only stay for the first hour too?  What happens with decisions they make?  Is there a log of their meeting minutes and then communication with you to communicate to the staff as needed?  Just wondering how it all works.

Rachael can stay unless about her.
Often talks to staff then to board then back if needed.

Not much to report

Board doesn’t really drive things.

Thank you for being willing to answer questions with me.

Sunday school 5/23/15

John 15:5 apart from me you can do nothing

I can do all things to Christ who strengthens me.

John 14:26

Writing with left hand is like life on our own versus the right hand by the leading of the spirit.

More thoughts on schooling

Focus on giftings…

School makes that hard. esp. A Beka academy

John 15:5 apart from me you can do nothing

I can do all things to Christ who strengthens me.

To get answered

What would be our goal, vision, mission statement, purpose…?

And how are we actually fulfilling that?

Phcs—
Is the school open to change and becoming more scripturally conservative or is it open to change but becoming more spiritually liberal and all-inclusive?  (Where do you see the school at on a spiritual, scriptural level.  Where do you see it going/moving in that area?)

Still best thing afloat?

Vision, mission… Seems mixed or confused. What really is it?  Is everything we do filtered through it?

Love the kind and friendly staff, the family feel, the mixed age relationships, the support I felt and received, that it is a Christian school.

What challenges me on a minimal level is that it feels like we do a lot of filler activities and nonessential extras yet don’t always finish teaching core content.  (Is there any thoughts of changing some of the nonessential/elective classes or fun Friday?  How does everyone feel about the elective classes and fun Friday?  And what are future thoughts for those?)

I love that the intent is to weave our faith and God’s word in all we do. However, I also wish there was an emphasis on really teaching the word, since we are a Christian school and can.  To know the Bible well, understand practical application, and be able to debate or discuss topics using scripture.

Another challenge is accountability – but the deeper issue is to what and who.   (Is there any consideration of regularly checking to see that all we do is in line with our mission/goal/purpose, or does it actually already fulfill it?  Is there the intention of having everything in line with the mission/vision/purpose…?  Any statement of faith to sign?)

Really important/critical to understand why we do what we do.

Spiritually, the challenge is the philosophy. I want to train up my kids while they are young to have truth very clear: black and white, so they know what the truth is. As they grow older and have a firm foundation of the truth, presenting gray areas won’t be as confusing because they will see more clearly … And have the ability to discern and make the right choice instead of following the crowd. We are training them to follow the crowd of truth and really know and understand what and why we’re following it, so it is not blind. Then that they would be leaders and not followers of things that are false, not good, or would be confusing/send mixed messages while too young to understand…

Although anywhere we are, the family core teaching is primary anyway. Church, school, peers, friends, extended family, and other influences simply serve to support, encourage, and reinforce what is being taught at home, or provide confusion, gray area, lukewarmness, or complete opposition to the truth and values being taught.

I want my kids to have a real relationship with the Lord, love Him deeply, desire that all they do, think, say etc to honor God, love their family and maintain as a high, second priority in life, and I want them to love learning and be encouraged to know and grow in the giftings God has given them as well as persevere in learning some basics that we know will benefit their lives. I want their faith to be real and alive, families to be honored and respected, and learning to be directing them in truth, in key important knowledge, and most importantly in their gifting through the leading of the spirit.  I want them to have strong friends who are walking in the direction they are and can encourage them.  I know it feels like we are keeping them in an unrealistic bubble, but it is a safe time of training and preparation before sending them out into the world.

Am I open to different opinions?  Only on nonessentials otherwise no, not really. I want what to do/have what I am convicted to be right – without compromise.  And, as I taught Amabella all year, it doesn’t matter what others think or say, you don’t choose to be like them because it is easier, you do what is healthy for you or what you know to be right.  That doesn’t mean we dislike people we disagree with, we simply disagree…  In fact, many we love deeply we don’t agree with and we still strive to lovingly stand up for truth and what we consider right for our children, family, and self.

It is exceptionally hard when people you dearly care about or love are involved.

Why are we doing what we are doing?  Because friends are doing it. Because others have convictions we may not have, because it is our church, because I don’t want to miss out. Or is it because God is leading us in this direction?

Additional Thoughts

Should I meet with Sandi (as school board) to ask clarifying questions?

Should I meet with Rachael to ask clarifying questions?

Should I share with Adria the thought yet?

Look up all I can about PHCS to better understand it: history, vision, mission, direction, direction of change, leadership, strength…

Look at application and info sent to school.

Consider “applying” to SPCF school…
