Fruit of the spirit

Gal. 5:16-

Live by the spirit
– Thus not sin

– flesh desires sin

– you’re not under the law

– sinful nature acts are obvious – get rid of them
(Remove the bad and then all that is left is good)

Yielding to the spirit produces fruit

– love joy peace…

– no laws against these

– (also obvious)

– promise that as you walk in the spirit these become the natural outgrowths of the spirit

We all want to grow
How can we see fruit produced in our lives

-1. they are produced by the spirit not us

– (It depends on the spirit not on you)

– we spend our time preparing the ground (who we spend time with, what we read and do, …)

The walk in the spirit is trusting not trying

– 2. They are called fruit not fruits

– our concentration in on walking in the spirit, not trying to work on [patience, for example]

– like a diet – doesn’t work – fill yourself up with the right things and you will stay away from the wrong thing instead of trying to avoid the wrong things without filling yourself up with the right things.

((Take and use your gifts))

– 3. Fruit doesn’t grow overnight

(Private prayer, study the Bible, meet with believers…).

First step, rush in, God, how’s my soul?  Then listen for his answer

Gal 5:16-23

Truths

– these truths are the way Jesus interacts with us.

Love is self-giving service to others and cannot be true without action put to it.

Joy is rejoicing in the Lord in this life. (Be positive people, glad to be alive.). You’re looking at the big picture not the small picture view of your life.

Peace is in harmony with God and others. (Peaceful with others.)

Patience (Long-suffering) is endurance under provocation with no thought of retaliation. [Yikes!!]. Not giving up…

Kindness is showing concern for others. Treating others the way we want to be treated.

Goodness is overriding sense of wanting to do what is right.

Faithfulness is loyalty and reliability.

Gentleness is controlled strength. It is not weakness.  Voluntarily surrendering your right to someone else.

Self-control is the restraint of your natural impulses.

I love VBS music!!!  Such powerful words full of truth that I can’t sing them without feeling moved in my faith and trust in God. So glad my kids have been led at church to surrender their lives to Jesus and love and trust God with all of who they are.  It’s beautiful to hear my kids singing, “The world is searching for an answer, a ray of hope in a hopeless world.  Who can we turn to?  Where is our rescue?  There is someone, he’s the answer.  He’s the light and he’ll light the way. His name is Jesus and he came to save us.” And “I have decided to follow Jesus…” And, “My God is powerful… I will hold on to him”  Jesus is the answer and you can trust your life in his hands. Life isn’t easy, but there is peace in the journey knowing that not only am I not alone in my life, but God is walking alongside me. If you ever wonder what this means, I’d be happy to talk.

Importance of prayer – example of planned Parenthood

Eph 6:10-19

7 pieces of armor. Without prayer the others aren’t activated

V. 12 – “our struggle…” “We wrestle…”

Enemy want us to think there is no struggle – we are ALL in a battle

J R Tolkein:

“I will not risk open war”

“Open war is upon you whether you risk it or not”

1. The battle is unavoidable

No reason to be afraid, but be on guard

Wants us pulled to spiritual sleep

Spiritual warfare

PEOPLE are NOT your problem

“Our struggle is not against… But …

2. The enemy is invisible

Just because he is invisible he is not fictional

The puppets were not the problem, the adult lifting up the puppets were the problem. For us, what we face isn’t the problem. The problem is WHO is behind it – enemy.

Satan is NOT God’s peer or counterpart

He can not be everywhere or read your mind. He’s a master at discretion. He’s also running out of time

If our God is for us it doesn’t matter who is against us.

Don’t be distracted by what we can see so that we don’t pull back the curtain to see what we can’t see.

Eph 1:3,20; 3:10; 2:5-6;

You actually ARE in heavenly places because of our relationship with Christ.

3. The Location is accessible

Prayer taps us into heavenly places

“My house shall be a house of prayer.”

Prayer activates the armor.

4. Your weapons are not physical

Isa 59:17-18 – God’s armor

2 Cor. 10:3-4

Never forget

5. The victory is irrevocable

In the end we win

Be encouraged this week. Don’t feel pressured to finish. God wants to speak to you. Stop where God wants you to

Prioritize it

Actionable Intel – intelligence you gather that you should act on. What is God wanting you to do?

Each week craft a prayer strategy. Take all the Intel and pray about all those things so you can stand against the enemy.

Pray and strategize to pray

I was frightened by spirits lurking as shadows in my room at night, but I was never harmed. I was plagued by recurring nightmares (and night terrors), but never once did my darkest fear come to pass, but I was safe. I was terrified by debilitating fear of dogs, then chased by many, but never harmed and one day God miraculously freed me from the bondage of that fear. I was scared by the nightmares that came again and kept repeating over and over. Then that fear moved to my awake mind as I prepared for school and the vibrating, echoing, crazy making sounds reverberated in my mind with the intense fear that it brought, but God freed me from that as I began to call on His name in those moments. Next the fear haunted me as I would go to sleep and demonic faces, of which I’d never seen the like

would flash into my mind.

Experiencing God

1. God is still actively working (John 5:17)

2. God created us to be in relationship with Him (John 17:3)

(God’s great desire for us is not that we would study him – as if he were a subject to be figured out and mastered –

Not just to know him intellectually but know him as a person and experience him withing the context of a loving personal relationship

3.  God speaks to his people (John 10:27)

(5 clear ways – word, prayer, by the Holy Spirit, through other believers, amd through circumstances)

4. God speaks to usto show us what he’s doing and invite us to join him in that work (John 10:27)

(We’re hearing him and he has a reason for speaking to us.). When God speaks to us he does it clearly enough to know it’s him and what he’s saying to us.)

5. The crisis of belief

(God always leads us in the direction of what is good and best and will never call us to do anything that He will not also empower us to do.)

Where’s the crisis? (Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.). (1 Thess. 5:24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.)

So where’s the crisis?  God oftentimes invites us to follow him into assignments for which we do not feel qualified, at times that are inconvenient to us and that take us in directions that conflict with our personal likes and desires. (Like being a parent)

(It’s moving from what do we believe in our mind or with our lips, but requires us to step forward with actions.). It’s not our words that reveal what we believe but our actions. Biblical faith requires action.
Biblical faith always requires action. God doesn’t want you to merely believe what he says. He wants you to obey what he commands. When you face a crisis of belief, what you do next reveals what you really believe about God.  – Henry Blackaby
